Some people become family without ever sharing your last name. Growing up, I had a neighbor I called Granny. To me, she simply was my granny. When I think of her, I remember tea, the mimosa tree, and the kind of love that made ordinary afternoons unforgettable. This old-fashioned spice cake is a little tribute to those memories.

- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8 baking dish.
- Whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking soda, spices, and salt.
- Stir in melted butter, oil, applesauce, eggs, buttermilk, molasses, and vanilla. Mix just until combined.
- Pour into dish and bake 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Granny’s note: For a simple, old-fashioned finish, a dusting of powdered sugar is lovely. Let the cake cool before slicing for neater squares.
